Doubt

@ Pacifica Spindrift Players

The Project

I was the sound designer for the Pacifica Spindrift Players production of Doubt.

Amplification

We used 3 hanging area mics over the stage to add some presence to the voices of the actors.

Sound Design

Doubt is a beautiful play because it’s all about uncertainty. It employs the insecurity around religion to discuss the differences in the ways we see others and to reveal the cracks through which uncertainty seeps in. When I was designing the show, capturing the unsettling feeling of tension in the uncertainty was one of my main goals. The auditory motif of uncertainty that I created was a low radio wave synth—a drone which proved to be incredibly versatile because it worked well with the transitions, the phone ringing, and the haunting bird sound effects. Between scenes, I used a digital tap delay to blend church organs with rumbling or outdoor soundscapes.
