An Enemy of the People @ CSUS

The Project

I was the sound designer and house manager for the Crystal Springs Uplands School production of An Enemy of the People.

Amplification

To amplify the talents' voices, I employed an array of 7 phantom power microphones placed about the stage. Reverb, slap delay, and tab delay effects blended their voices with the soundscapes.

Sound Design

An Enemy of the People is all about our relationship to the truth. As townspeople learn that a new discovery has unfortunate consequences for the economy, politics and polarization crowd out the facts.

As the sound designer, my goal was to capture the protagonist’s claustrophobia as the town closes in on his scientific discovery. The soundscapes and scene transitions shift from upbeat Scandinavian melodies at the beginning of the show to ominous, invading tones at the end. By using reverb, sub-bass, and flanger digital plugins, I was able to seamlessly combine patriotic anthems with sub-30hz drones to rumble the audience’s seats and emphasize the much-needed dismantling of the status quo. The short intermission’s background soundtrack involved distorted rain noises that build to a crashing crescendo when the last act begins.

To pull the audience into the not so distant "world-without-truth" as they enter the house, I crafted a playlist of classic bittersweet songs.
